Portland Open Studios

Every year for the past nine years, select Portland area artists have opened their studios to the public two weekends in October.  This year is the tenth anniversary of Portland Open Studios, and I'm delighted that I've been selected to participate! My studio will be open to visitors October 10-11 and October 17-18, provided you've purchased the Portland Open Studios Tour Guide!  This tour guide includes maps and directions to all 100 artist studios, as well as a 16-month calendar and sample photos of each artist's work!  Pick up your Tour Guide at New Seasons, Art Media, or directly from me.  I'll be doing demonstrations of basic encaustic painting, and will be collecting bottle caps for my other projects!

Mixed Media Exhibit at Sixth Street Gallery

100th Monkey Fundraiser

The 100th Monkey Studio is celebrating its 3rd Anniversary, and the opening of their 3rd Annual Juried Show & the 50/50 show is Friday September 4th from 6-9 pm. I made a piece for the 50/50 show - all the pieces are only $50, and 50% of the proceeds benefits 100th Monkey's Artist Scholarship Fund. Those that don't sell during September will be available for sale through the end of the year in the 100th Monkey store.

100th Monkey invited artists to create an 8" x 8" piece that celebrated the story of the studio's namesake - you can read the story of the 100th Monkey here. I went for a pretty literal interpretation . . . joy of the paintbrush and is having more than a barrel of . . . well, you get the idea.

My one-woman show at CubeSpace will be on display in the Agora and several of the smaller conference rooms starting in mid-March and will be on display through the end of June.  All the work has been completed in the past two years and includes encaustics, fiber art, and assemblage in the themes of home, memory, and belonging.  The opening is March 28th from 6-8pm!  Feel free to drop by.

Appearance on AM Northwest May 29th

To see the video from my recent early morning and slightly "frumpled" appearance on AM Northwest, go here!  I'm demonstrating printing with heat-molded foam stamps.  There's also a step-by-step demo of this technique here on the website.

Shadowbox Showing at Mad/50 in March

My shadowbox for the Mad/50 community art space at the corner of SE Madison and 50th in Portland, OR will be installed on March 15th.   The theme is "home."  I've been working on it and recording the process on my blog here.  There won't be an official opening party - just take a walk up Hawthorne, go a block north and see it for yourself!  It'll be there through May 5th.

Free Collage Event March 29th

Jewelry Demo on AM Northwest March 25th

I'll be on TV again and this means that you'll have access soon to another free video craft demo!  I'll link to it as soon as we film - This one will be on making jewelry from old bicycle inner tubes! We'll be live on the air from 9-10 am on March 25th. This is just one of the many ideas and techniques that I cover in my Junk Drawer Jewels class starting May 7th.  If you're curious about what happened last time I was on the air demonstrating memory jewelry, click here for the video link! UPDATE: And now there's video!  Click over here to the AM Northwest website and take a gander.

Portland International Women's Day, March 9th at Portland State University

International Women's Day is March 8, honoring the contributions of women to communities and cultures around the world.  In Portland, the celebration happens on March 9th from 2 pm to 8 pm at Portland State University, on the  third floor of the Smith Memorial Student Union at 1825 SW Broadway.  You can learn more about the history of the International Women's Day celebration here, and more about the Portland event at http://www.piwd.org.  Local tribal belly dance troupe Gypsy Caravan will be performing, as will Liv Warfield.  I'll be there selling some of my hand-made jewelry, along with a lot of other wonderful vendors and organizations sharing women's health information, workshops, and resources.

A Celebration of Souls Art Exhibit Opening Reception in Vancouver, WA,  November 2nd

Friday, November 2nd is a busy day for art openings!  I'm most likely to be at "A Celebration of Souls" at the Sixth Street Gallery in Vancouver, WA where I'll have two pieces on display.  The exhibit is another celebration of art in the tradition of Dia de los Muertos, and promises to be a lovely evening.  Apparently, my fascination for this celebration - a blending of indigenous Mexican beliefs with Christianity - is coming through in my work! For more information about La Dia de los Muertos, check out the wikipedia article, or browse this collection of articles and photos from Mexico Connect.

Dia de los Muertos Exhibit and Community Night at Linn-Benton C.C. in Albany, November 2nd

The opening reception and Community Night is November 2nd from 5:30 pm to 8 pm, and includes musical entertainment by Fernell Lopez and a dance performance by La Fiesta Mexicana 4-H Dance Club.  If you love this traditional Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead as much as I do, you'll want to wander to Albany - or find a local celebration!

If you're a woman, have an entrepreneurial spirit, and are looking to make new friends (and maybe a collage or two), come by my place!  I'll be hosting the October 16th Women's Networking Group meeting at my home studio - it's a great group of women, mostly entrepreneurs, who get together at CubeSpace and in individual women's homes to share food and ideas!  The pot-luck event runs 6-8 pm, but I'll keep things open a little longer for those who want to do a little collage and get creative with their networking.  Visit the Cubespace website for more information (the event costs $12, but includes the ability to promote yourself via the group's listserve), and either call Cubespace at 503-206-3500 or e-mail Eva to register (eva@cubespace.com). Craft Segment on AM Northwest

I'll be sharing a few tidbits from my Memory Jewelry class on AM Northwest, KATU Channel 2, between 9 and 10 am, Wednesday, September 26th.  This is perfect for folks who can't make a night class like the one coming up in November, but still want to learn how to use glass pebbles to transform their favorite images into pendants, magnets, and push pins!  (Postscript: It went great!  See the segment here)
